President-elect Donald Trump has chosen U.S. Representative Michael Waltz, a retired Army National Guard officer and combat veteran, as his national security adviser, as reported by the Associated Press.
This decision comes amid concerns in Congress about potentially shifting the balance of power in the House by removing GOP members while control remains uncertain.
If Waltz vacates his seat, a special election may be required to fill the position.
In his new role, Waltz will take charge of several pressing national security matters, including the U.S. military aid efforts in Ukraine, the increasing tensions involving the Russia-North Korea alliance, and rising attacks in the Middle East by Iranian-backed proxy forces.
He will also face the complex task of navigating calls for a cease-fire in the ongoing conflict between Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
Appointing Waltz, a respected figure with extensive military expertise, indicates Trump’s commitment to a direct, assertive approach to national security in his upcoming administration. An official announcement is expected soon.
