Texas Majority PAC, funded significantly by George Soros, has quickly intensified its efforts to support Democratic candidates in Texas, according to recent campaign finance reports.
The PAC spent over $5 million between July 1 and September 26, a sharp increase from the low six-figure amounts it previously disbursed at its launch, state records reveal. Soros contributed about half of the $4.4 million that Texas Majority PAC raised in the July to September period, as the balance of power in the House may depend on several tight congressional races in Texas, alongside Democratic Senate candidate Colin Allred narrowing the polling gap with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
“George Soros and the Democrats have known for years that if they flip Texas they change the course of our country forever, and that starts with unseating Sen. Cruz,” a Cruz campaign spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “The stakes could not be higher. Soros will continue flooding the State with outside money, which is why Texans need to show up on November 5th to hold the line and ensure that Texas remains our nation’s conservative stronghold.”
Cruz leads Allred by just 3.6 points in FiveThirtyEight’s latest poll average, with Allred significantly closing the gap after trailing by over 6 points in June.
Dallas County Democrats have been major beneficiaries of Texas Majority PAC’s funding, receiving about $1 million in the last three months reported. The county party is focused on registering voters and conducting get-out-the-vote initiatives, including phone banking and door knocking.
This investment in Dallas County could yield substantial returns for Texas Democrats, as it accounted for a net gain of 291,500 votes during the 2020 presidential election, according to data from The New York Times.
Much of the PAC’s spending targets majority Hispanic counties that have leaned Republican in recent elections. From July to September, Texas Majority PAC allocated over $1 million to the Democratic parties in Cameron, Hidalgo, and El Paso counties, all of which are majority Latino according to the latest Census data. Between 2016 and 2020, Hidalgo and Cameron counties shifted at least 20 points to the right, while El Paso County became 7.1 points more Republican, as reported by election data. Hidalgo and Cameron counties also intersect with Texas’ 14th and 34th Congressional Districts, two of the state’s closest House races, according to the Texas Tribune.
Republicans have consistently gained support among Latino voters over the past three election cycles, increasing their share from 28% in 2016 to 39% in 2022, based on CNN exit polls.
Soros’ philanthropic network invested tens of millions in left-leaning Latino advocacy and political mobilization in 2022. This included funding organizations like Equis Labs, which produced reports advising Democrats on engaging Spanish-speaking voters, and the Latino Victory Project, aimed at electing more progressive Latino officials.
Additionally, Soros backed the Latino Media Network’s acquisition of 18 Spanish-language radio stations across the U.S., leading some conservative hosts to leave due to concerns over editorial direction.
“It is no surprise donors like George Soros would be nervous about continuing to lose Hispanic voters cycle after cycle,” Republican Florida Sen. Rick Scott previously told the DCNF. “Today’s Democrat Party is all in for more government control and a socialist agenda. Many Hispanic voters understand the dangers of socialism from first-hand experiences and that doesn’t bode well for Democrats.”
A New York Times/Siena University poll from September indicated that former President Donald Trump garnered 42% of the Latino vote, whereas an August survey by UnidosUS and BSP Research reported his support at just 31% among Hispanics.
Texas Majority PAC allocated $735,000 for consultants to enhance its canvassing efforts, which involve engaging potential voters through door-to-door campaigning and coordinated phone calls. The PAC also contributed an additional $700,000 to the Bexar County Democrats, a county that provided Democrats with around 140,000 votes in the 2020 presidential election.
Texas Majority PAC did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
