California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has vetoed legislation that would have enabled illegal immigrants to access loans of up to $150,000 for home purchases. This decision followed former President Donald Trump’s announcement that, if elected, he would ban foreign nationals from securing home mortgages.

Now why in the world would he do that?

In a setback for his fellow Democrats, Newsom vetoed the bill due to concerns about its potential impact on California’s budget, according to Politico.
“Expanding program eligibility must be carefully considered within the broader context of the annual state budget to ensure we manage our resources effectively,” Newsom wrote.
Notably, Newsom’s departure from his party’s stance follows Vice President Kamala Harris’s nomination as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. Before her vice presidency, Harris was California’s senator. On Friday, Newsom refuted claims that his veto was a message to his Democratic colleagues, asserting that his decision was based entirely on the bill’s merits.
“The bill that was sent to me was [on] a program that had no money, and it was expanding eligibility to a program that had no money,” Newsom said.
“It seemed rather curious to me. So it was unnecessary and completely consistent with prior vetoes along those similar lines,” he added.
Last week, Democrats in the state criticized Newsom for delaying a reparations bill on the final day of the legislative session, as previously reported by Resist the Mainstream.
“If the governor wants to veto the bills, don’t call your Black legislators and tell them to stop the bills from coming to your desk first,” the lead organizer for the Coalition for a Just and Equitable California, Cris Lodgson, said.
“You be a man. Veto the bills with your chest and stand on that as a man,” Lodgson added.
California State Senator Brian Dahle (R), who notably ran against Newsom for governor in 2022, commended the governor for his decision. Dahle suggested that Newsom’s veto of the bill is a strategic move to maintain political safety.
“He’s the master of gaslighting,” Dahle said.
“I mean, they’ve been doing it forever. I’ve been here 12 years, and all they do is politics,” he added.
Former Democratic Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula (D) sharply criticized Newsom for vetoing the bill that would have enabled illegal immigrants to buy homes in California.
“I have always believed this bill is about fairness,” Arambula said.
“The veto doesn’t change the fact that many people — including undocumented immigrants — dream of owning a home so that generational wealth can be passed to their children. They are people who are responsible, work hard, and pay their ample share of taxes,” he added.
Assemblymember Tom Lackey (R), who has friends who are illegal immigrants, stated that the legislation would undermine accountability.
“I have a heart for everybody,” Lackey said.
“But there are some people who have not yet found themselves worthy of taxpayer benefits,” he added.
Newsom’s veto comes after he struck down a similar proposal last year that barred state prisons from sharing information about foreign nationals with federal officials,” Politico reported.
