Former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz Declines Attorney General Consideration

Former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz has decided to withdraw from consideration for the role of Attorney General, citing the need to prioritize a seamless transition for the incoming Trump administration.

Gaetz, a nominee surrounded by controversy, expressed gratitude for the support he received but acknowledged that his confirmation process was becoming an unwarranted distraction.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday and appreciate their thoughtful feedback and the incredible support of so many,” Gaetz said. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, so I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General.”

Gaetz stressed the urgency of having a fully operational Department of Justice ready to act on the first day of Donald Trump’s presidency. “Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” he added.

Despite stepping back from the nomination, Gaetz reiterated his commitment to Trump’s vision for America. “I remain fully committed to seeing that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice, and I’m certain he will Save America.”

“I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump said on Truth Social.

The Trump/Vance transition team is anticipated to act swiftly in selecting and nominating a new Attorney General candidate capable of achieving prompt Senate confirmation.
