Car Crash Lands Joe Manchin’s Wife in Hospital

Sen. Joe Manchin’s wife, Gayle, has been hospitalized due to non-life-threatening injuries from a car accident in Alabama during official travel, as announced by the senator on Tuesday.

Sen. Manchin posted an update on X: “My wife Gayle and her colleague Guy Land were involved in a car accident on the way from the airport to the hotel in Birmingham, Alabama for an Appalachian Regional Commission event that was planned for today.”

Sen. Manchin added: “She remains in stable condition and will stay there for a couple of days for precautionary measures.”

Having immersed themselves in politics for decades, Joe Manchin currently serves as a Senator, heading the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, while Gayle Manchin co-chairs the Appalachian Regional Commission. President Joe Biden appointed her to this role in 2021, following Senate approval. Prior to this, Gayle held the position of Secretary of Education and Arts in West Virginia and had a background as a public school teacher.

The Manchins, married since 1967, recently faced a significant change as Joe declared his retirement from the Senate in November, conveying to constituents that he won’t seek reelection in 2024.
