Despite calls from California’s lieutenant governor to exclude him, former President Trump remains an option for voters in the 2024 GOP presidential primary.
The state’s Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, officially certified the candidate list on Thursday night. This decision contrasts with Maine’s recent move to disqualify Trump from their ballot, following a similar ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court.
The court argued that Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, fueled the Capitol attack, deeming him ineligible under the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause. Activists in states like Oregon are also urging officials to remove Trump from their primary ballots under Section 3 of the 14th amendment.
Attempts to exclude Trump from primary ballots in Minnesota and Michigan did not succeed. The U.S. Supreme Court is anticipated to render a conclusive verdict on Trump’s nationwide eligibility.
