President Trump Declares February 9 as ‘Gulf of America Day’

President Donald J. Trump has officially designated February 9, 2025, as the first-ever Gulf of America Day. This follows his January 20 executive order, Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness, which renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The renaming, implemented by the Department of the Interior, reflects the administration’s effort to celebrate America’s history and reinforce its cultural and geographic identity.

The Gulf of America, bordered by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, and extending to maritime boundaries with Mexico and Cuba, has long played a crucial role in the nation’s economy, environment, and national security.

In his proclamation, President Trump highlighted the Gulf’s importance to the United States. “The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once-burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America,” he stated.

“As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” Trump added.

He urged public officials and all Americans to observe Gulf of America Day with “appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”

Following the executive order, the U.S. Coast Guard began using the term Gulf of America, marking the first official government adoption of the name.
