Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced that an arrest warrant has been issued for Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump. The warrant includes charges of attempted felony murder related to a traffic accident that severely injured a six-year-old girl during Routh’s attempted escape in September.
On September 15, U.S. Secret Service agents reportedly spotted Routh near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. When approached, Routh fled north on Interstate 95. During the ensuing pursuit by Martin County Sheriff’s deputies, a car accident occurred, leaving the young girl gravely injured.
Attorney General Moody stated, “While we continue to seek justice for President Trump, we will fight just as hard to ensure Mr. Routh pays for the tragedy his criminal actions brought on this Florida family.”
Following the incident, Governor Ron DeSantis ordered a state investigation into the alleged assassination attempt. Both DeSantis and Moody have criticized federal agencies, particularly the FBI and Department of Justice, for allegedly impeding Florida’s investigation by withholding evidence.
In October, Moody filed a lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, citing federal resistance. Despite these hurdles, Florida investigators uncovered additional alleged crimes committed by Routh, which led to the current charges.
The arrest warrant accuses Routh of attempted felony murder, which prosecutors argue constitutes domestic terrorism. This charge, under Florida law, carries a potential life sentence. An 18-page affidavit from the Attorney General’s Office outlines the evidence collected during the investigation.
Governor DeSantis expressed frustration over federal interference, stating, “The tide will turn on January 20th, and we fully expect that the federal roadblocks will be removed. The would-be assassin needs to face the full force of justice, and the people deserve the truth about the defendant’s history, motivations, and plan.”
Moody emphasized her commitment to seeking justice, saying, “My heart breaks for the child and her family… We will continue to seek justice for all impacted by Routh’s actions.”
Further developments are expected as the investigation unfolds and Florida authorities pursue transparency and accountability in this case.
