In August 2021, Herschel Walker launched a Republican Senate campaign in Georgia, following months of encouragement and support from former President Donald Trump.
A first-time politician, Walker faced scrutiny during his Senate run due to controversial statements and revelations about his personal life and business dealings. The race between Walker and Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock became one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the 2022 midterms. The closely contested battle went to a runoff election in December 2022, where Walker narrowly lost to Warnock.
This year, Walker joined Trump on the campaign trail in Georgia shortly before Election Day, as the former president worked to carry the key battleground state, which he had narrowly lost to President Biden four years earlier.
Walker has now been named by Trump as ambassador to the Bahamas, marking him as the third Republican who lost a recent Senate race in Georgia to receive a nomination for a post in Trump’s potential second administration. Former Senator David Perdue, who lost his seat to Democrat Jon Ossoff in 2020, was nominated by Trump to serve as ambassador to China, and former Senator Kelly Loeffler, who also lost to Warnock in 2020, was tapped to lead the Small Business Administration.
